  Tornado Awareness

This page contains general information about tornadoes and what to do. It is important to know basic terms, what to do, and what radio stations to listen to.

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a strong thunderstorm cloud to the ground. The most violent tornadoes can reach wind speeds of 250mph or more. In some extreme cases, damage paths can span more than one mile wide and 50 miles long.

Stay Tuned for Storm Warnings
Listen to your local radio and TV stations for updated storm information and know the difference between a tornado WATCH and a tornado WARNING. Here in Oxford, Ohio you can turn your radio to WOXY 97.7 FM (in Oxford) or WMUB 88.5 FM (on the Miami University campus).

  • A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible in your area.
  • A tornado WARNING means a tornado has been sighted and may be headed for your area. Go to safety immediately.

WARNING SIRENS
There are warning sirens throughout the city of Oxford and the county Oxford is in.

In impending danger, the Oxford-area weather sirens are turned on. It is a continuous tone for three minutes every fifteen minutes.

All sirens in Oxford and in Butler County are tested on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 12:00 Noon. The tests are not conducted when there is the possibility of severe weather on that day.

WHAT TO DO
Tornadoes may strike quickly, with little or no warning. Make plans before a tornado comes so you know what to do and where to go. For example, in impending danger, go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway, etc.), away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows.
